TOEFL Overview

The Listening test takes approximately 60 minutes. There are 34-51 questions designed to test your ability to understand spoken English.

Reading

The Reading test takes 60-80 minutes. There are 36-56 questions, designed to test a wide range of reading skills.

  • Different question types: multiple choice, identifying information, matching information, etc.
  • Texts are taken from academic sources
  • 3-4 passages with 12-14 questions each
Writing

The Writing test takes 50 minutes. There are two tasks to complete.

  • Task 1: Write at least 150-225 words in about 20 minutes
  • Task 2: Write at least 300-350 words in about 30 minutes
  • Task 1 requires you to write a response based on reading and listening tasks
  • Task 2 requires you to write an essay in response to a question
Speaking

The Speaking test takes about 20 minutes and consists of six tasks.

  • Task 1: Express an opinion on a familiar topic (45 seconds)
  • Task 2: Speak based on reading and listening tasks (45 seconds)
  • Task 3: Speak based on reading, listening, and speaking tasks (60 seconds)
  • Task 4: Express an opinion on an academic course or campus situation (60 seconds)
