The Listening test takes approximately 30 minutes. There are 40 questions designed to test your ability to understand spoken English.
- Section 1: A conversation between two people in an everyday social context
- Section 2: A monologue set in an everyday social context
- Section 3: A conversation between up to four people in an educational or training context
- Section 4: A monologue on an academic subject
The Reading test takes 60 minutes. There are 40 questions, designed to test a wide range of reading skills.
- Different question types: multiple choice, identifying information, matching information, etc.
- Texts are taken from books, journals, magazines and newspapers
- Academic Reading: Three long texts which range from descriptive and factual to discursive and analytical
- General Training Reading: Section 1 contains two or three short texts, Section 2 contains two texts, Section 3 contains one long text
The Writing test takes 60 minutes. There are two tasks to complete.
- Task 1: Write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes
- Task 2: Write at least 250 words in about 40 minutes
- Academic Writing: Task 1 requires you to describe and explain data, Task 2 requires you to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem
- General Training Writing: Task 1 requires you to write a letter, Task 2 requires you to write an essay
The Speaking test takes between 11 and 14 minutes and consists of an oral interview between the test taker and an examiner.
- Part 1: Introduction and interview (4-5 minutes) - The examiner introduces themselves and asks you to introduce yourself and confirm your identity.
- Part 2: Individual long turn (3-4 minutes) - The examiner gives you a task card which asks you to talk about a particular topic and which includes points you can cover in your talk.
- Part 3: Two-way discussion (4-5 minutes) - The examiner will ask further questions which are connected to the topic of Part 2.
